What Does an SEO Retainer Actually Buy? A Month by Month Breakdown

I see SEO retainers from both sides: I work inside a 950 person agency by day and run my own Norfolk shop at night. Here is a plain, month by month breakdown of what a real SEO retainer buys, what it should never be, and how to audit the one you are paying for right now.

Wondering what an SEO retainer really includes? See exactly what each plan buys and what it costs →

I see SEO retainers from both sides of the table. By day I work inside a 950 person agency, where retainers get built, priced, and delivered at scale across thousands of clients. At night I run Ravana Solutions, my own two person shop in Norfolk, where I do the SEO myself for businesses across Hampton Roads. So I have signed the invoices and I have shipped the work.

Here is the problem I run into constantly. I ask a business owner what their current SEO company did for them last month, and they cannot tell me. They pay a few hundred or a few thousand dollars every month and genuinely do not know what they bought. That is not their fault. It is the fault of an industry that hides behind jargon and vague reports. This post fixes that. It lays out, month by month, exactly what a real SEO retainer should buy you.

What Does a Monthly SEO Retainer Actually Include?#

A monthly SEO retainer buys a recurring cycle of work: technical fixes to your website, new and improved content, ongoing Google Business Profile management, local citations and listings, and plain reporting tied to the rankings and leads you actually care about. In the Hampton Roads market, a legitimate local SEO retainer runs about $750 to $2,500 a month, billed month to month with no long contract. At Ravana Solutions I offer three tiers: Foundation at $750 a month, Growth at $1,500 a month, and Domination at $2,500 a month. Anything far below that range is usually an automated report, not real strategic work.

What Should Month One of an SEO Retainer Look Like?#

Month one is not a mystery. A good retainer opens with a full audit of your site: a technical crawl for broken pages, slow load times, missing schema, and indexing problems, plus a look at your Google Business Profile and how you stack up against the competitors ranking above you. I run this with Raptor, an open source SEO audit tool I built with 114 plus analyzers, so nothing gets missed.

From that audit comes a baseline, meaning we write down exactly where you rank today so every future month can be measured against it. Then the quick wins start: fixing the technical errors holding you back, cleaning up title tags and on page SEO, and finishing the Google Business Profile that most businesses leave half done. You end month one knowing exactly where you stand, with the first fixes already live.

What Should Every Month After That Deliver?#

After the setup month, what you get depends on the tier you are paying for. Here is what each of my plans delivers every month, straight from the pricing page.

Foundation, $750 a month. This is the maintain and capture tier. Every month you get four optimizations, which can be content, page, or profile work, hands on Google Business Profile management, on page SEO and technical fixes, review monitoring, and a local rank tracking dashboard. Every deliverable is shared for you to review, you get monthly reporting, and once a year a competitor visibility report. It is built to hold the visibility you already have and capture existing demand.

Growth, $1,500 a month. This is the actively climbing tier. It includes everything in Foundation, then doubles the work to eight optimizations a month and adds service area pages, schema optimization, a local pack strategy, basic AI search readiness, and on page conversion recommendations. You also get a quarterly strategy call. This is the plan for a business that wants to rank for new keywords and capture demand it does not have yet.

Domination, $2,500 a month. This is the senior strategy tier. It includes everything in Growth, then pushes to twelve optimizations a month including monthly pillar content, a full LLM and GEO strategy aimed at getting you cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, a custom Looker Studio dashboard, a direct Slack channel with me, monthly strategy calls, a monthly competitor deep dive, a quarterly technical audit, and conversion rate optimization. This is for businesses that want to rank everywhere their customers search.

You can see how this plays out for a single city on any of my service area pages, like Norfolk SEO or Newport News SEO.

What a Retainer Should Never Be#

If you are paying a monthly retainer and any of the following describes what you get, you are being sold a report, not results.

A PDF with no implementation. The worst retainers send a monthly PDF full of charts and no actual work on your site. A report is a record of work done, not the work itself. If nobody touched your website this month, you did not buy SEO.

The directory dump. If the deliverable is that "we submitted your site to 50 directories," that is a tactic from 2012 that does close to nothing today. A handful of accurate, consistent local citations matter. Spraying your business name across low quality directories does not.

The 12 month lock in. If the only way to get the price is to sign a long contract, ask why. A confident SEO company earns your business every month with data. My plans are month to month with no contract, because the monthly report should be the reason you stay, not a signature you already gave. The boutique versus big agency decision often comes down to exactly this: who is willing to be accountable month to month.

How to Audit the SEO Retainer You Are Paying For Right Now#

You do not need to be an SEO expert to tell whether your retainer is working. Ask three questions and expect three numbers.

Ask what keywords you rank for now that you did not rank for three months ago. A working retainer moves this number up. If your provider cannot name a single new keyword you gained, that is your answer.

Ask how many positions your target keywords have moved. Real reporting shows a keyword sitting at position 18 in March and position 6 in June. Movement is the point.

Ask how many leads came from organic search this month. Rankings are a means to an end: the phone ringing and the contact form filling out. A good report ties keyword movement to inbound leads.

If your current provider cannot answer those three questions with specific numbers, you are not in a real retainer. This is exactly the kind of thing a free audit surfaces in an afternoon. For W.M. Stone, a Norfolk logistics firm, this is the method that took their site from 0 to 108 organic ranking keywords and drove more than 65 qualified inbound leads in twelve months. For Blackbird Detailing in Virginia Beach, the same approach grew organic ranking keywords 32 percent. Those are the numbers you would use to decide whether to keep paying me.

When an SEO Retainer Is the Wrong Buy#

Sometimes the honest answer is that a retainer is not what you need yet. If your website is slow, built on a dated platform, missing basic structure, or simply not built to convert, paying me monthly to optimize it is like tuning an engine that is sitting on a broken frame. The money is better spent fixing the foundation first.

When I see this on an audit, I say so. A website build at Ravana runs $2,500 to $20,000 fixed depending on scope, and for a business with a genuinely broken site that is the right first move, not a retainer. Once the foundation is solid, the monthly SEO work has something real to compound on. You can read exactly how I price both paths on the pricing page, and I will tell you which one you actually need on the audit call, even when the honest answer means less money for me this month. That is also why a smaller market like Suffolk SEO often starts with a build first and a lighter retainer.

How AI Search Changes What a Retainer Must Include in 2026#

Here is what most retainers have not caught up to. Your customers are not only searching Google anymore. They are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and the AI overview at the top of Google who to hire and what to buy. If your SEO retainer is not thinking about that, it is optimizing for half the search landscape.

Ranking inside AI answers is a different craft than ranking a blue link. It means writing extractable answers, the clear self contained paragraphs an AI can lift and cite, structuring pages so machines can read them, and earning the authority signals that make a model trust you enough to name you. I build this into every Ravana plan, at the readiness level on Growth and as a full LLM and GEO strategy on Domination. I have documented what actually works in my field report on generative engine optimization, including a real client ranking first on dozens of ChatGPT prompts. A retainer sold in 2026 that ignores AI search is already behind.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How much should I pay for local SEO?

In the Hampton Roads market, plan on $750 to $2,500 a month for a real local SEO retainer. Most single location businesses do well at $750 to $1,500. Competitive categories, multiple locations, or an aggressive growth goal push you toward $2,500. The right number depends on your competition and how many keywords and neighborhoods you are targeting, not on a one size fits all package.

Is a $300 a month SEO service worth it?

Honestly, no, not in a market this size. At $300 a month, nobody senior is touching your site each month. That budget buys an automated report and maybe a few directory listings, not strategy, content, or technical work. Real strategic SEO in this market starts around $750 a month, because that is the point where a senior operator can actually do accountable work on your account.

How long before an SEO retainer pays for itself?

Most of my clients see measurable ranking movement in three to four months and meaningful lead growth in the four to six month range. SEO compounds, so the value keeps climbing after that. If the data is not trending the right way by month four, a good provider adjusts the strategy or you stop paying. Anyone promising first page results in 30 days is either lying or doing something risky.

Can I do SEO myself instead of paying a retainer?

You can, and for some businesses that is the right call. Claiming your Google Business Profile, gathering reviews, and writing honest pages about what you do are all things an owner can handle. The retainer earns its price on the work that takes time and real expertise: technical fixes, ongoing content, competitor strategy, and now AI search visibility. If you would rather buy back that time and skip the learning curve, that is what a retainer is for.

Should an SEO contract lock me in for a year?

No. A long lock in protects the agency, not you. Every SEO plan I offer is month to month with no contract, and the work already done stays yours if you leave. The monthly report should be the reason you stay. If a company will only give you a fair price in exchange for a 12 month signature, treat that as a signal about how confident they really are in the results.
