6 Best SEO Companies in Richmond, VA (2026): An Honest Comparison
I run a Norfolk based agency and work at a 950 person SEO shop by day. Here is an honest comparison of Richmond, VA SEO companies: who is genuinely local, what each one does well, and where the real openings are in a big capital metro.

I work at a 950 person SEO agency during the day, so I see how large agencies run search across thousands of clients. On the side I run Ravana Solutions, where I do the SEO myself for businesses across Virginia. That combination gives me a view most people writing these lists do not have.
One thing up front, because it matters for how you read this: I am based in Norfolk, not Richmond. I am actively expanding into the Richmond market and I do not have an office there yet. So when I rank the companies below, I am putting the established Richmond agencies ahead of my own shop on local presence, because that is the honest picture. This is also not a pay to play list. Nobody paid to be here. I am including companies that genuinely serve the Richmond metro, noting what each does well and where it falls short, and I am including my own company because I think transparency is more useful than pretending I am a neutral observer.
How Did I Evaluate These Companies?#
For each company, I looked at:
- Are they actually in the Richmond metro? A lot of firms that rank for "Richmond SEO" are national agencies with a landing page, or Northern Virginia shops in Ashburn that happen to list Richmond as a service area. I prioritized companies with a real office in the RVA metro, from Scott's Addition to Glen Allen to Midlothian. That is why a few well marketed "Virginia SEO" names are not on this list.
- Do they have search visibility themselves? If an SEO company cannot rank its own site, that tells you something.
- What do they specialize in? Some are SEO focused, some are full service agencies where SEO is one of a dozen services.
- Team size and who does the work. A three person studio operates very differently from a 950 person agency, and neither is automatically better. It depends on what you need.
1. Workshop Digital#
Website: workshopdigital.com Based in: Richmond, VA (Scott's Addition) Best for: Mid market businesses that want an established Richmond agency with real technical and content depth
Workshop Digital is the strongest SEO presence actually headquartered in Richmond. They have been in the market since 2009, they sit on West Clay Street in Scott's Addition, and they run SEO, paid media, and analytics as their core services. Their SEO team is built from analysts and strategists rather than account managers who pass the real work to junior staff, and they will travel to meet clients in person, which is not nothing in a relationship based market.
If you search "richmond va seo," they are the local name you keep running into, and they earn it.
Strengths: Deep Richmond roots, a real local office, strong technical and content teams, transparent reporting Considerations: Their sweet spot skews mid market and up. If you are a single location local business on an entry level budget, you may be below their typical engagement, and you are getting an agency team rather than one accountable person.
2. Third Marble Marketing#
Website: thirdmarblemarketing.com Based in: Richmond, VA Best for: Small businesses that want focused, transparent, no contract Google Ads and SEO
Third Marble has been at this since 2009 and does exactly two things: Google Ads and SEO. That focus is a feature. They are a Google Premier Partner, which puts them in the top few percent of Google certified agencies, and they publish transparent pricing with no long contracts. For a small Richmond or Glen Allen business that wants to get on page one without a full service retainer, they are an easy company to talk to.
Strengths: Narrow focus on paid search and SEO, no contracts, transparent pricing, strong fit for small budgets Considerations: They run a productized, repeatable process, so you are getting a proven system more than a bespoke strategy. They also lean heavily on paid Google Ads. If your goal is organic SEO as the main engine, make sure the plan you sign is weighted that way and not mostly ad spend.
3. Addison Clark#
Website: addisonclarkonline.com Based in: Richmond, VA Best for: Small to mid businesses that want SEO built into a broader marketing program
Addison Clark is a full service Richmond marketing agency. Alongside SEO they do branding, web design, video production, social, and multi channel campaigns, and they build custom strategies for each client rather than dropping you into a fixed package. If you want one local partner handling several channels at once and you value creative work, they are worth a conversation.
Strengths: Full service under one roof, custom strategy instead of cookie cutter packages, strong creative and video Considerations: SEO is one of many services here. Make sure it gets dedicated specialist attention and does not become a secondary add on to a branding or web design project. Ask specifically who owns your SEO and what they will do in month one.
4. Ravana Solutions (That Is Us)#
Website: ravanasolutions.com Based in: Norfolk, VA (expanding into Richmond) Best for: Local businesses in the Richmond suburbs that want to work directly with the person doing the SEO
Full disclosure: this is my company, and I placed it fourth on purpose. The three companies above have Richmond offices and I do not, so on pure local presence they are ahead of me today. Here is the honest case for us anyway.
I am a two person operation. I, Nick, handle all the technical work: code, SEO strategy, audits, and implementation. Ishan handles client relationships and operations. There is no junior staff, no outsourcing, no handoffs. I work at a 950 person agency during the day, so I bring enterprise level SEO knowledge to local business pricing, and I built Raptor, an open source SEO audit tool with 114 plus analyzers, plus published field research on getting recommended inside AI search.
Because I am coming into Richmond from Norfolk without a downtown office, I am honest about where I can win for you: the suburbs and the near me searches. Short Pump, Henrico, and the West End are affluent, fast growing, and far less contested than the crowded downtown head terms. That is a lane a focused shop can win, and it is where most of the calls actually come from. I work remotely and I travel up for the work that needs a face. On results, I do not invent numbers. For W.M. Stone, a Norfolk logistics firm, I took a site from 0 to 83 organic ranking keywords and drove more than 65 qualified inbound leads in a year. For Blackbird Detailing in Virginia Beach, we grew organic ranking keywords 32 percent across Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Norfolk. That is Hampton Roads work, and it is the same method I am bringing to Richmond.
Strengths: Direct access to the person doing the work, agency scale SEO experience at local pricing from $750 a month, month to month with no contract, free site audit Considerations: No Richmond office yet, and I am newer to this market than the established local agencies. I also keep my client list small on purpose, so capacity is limited.

5. Torx Media#
Website: torxmedia.com Based in: Richmond, VA (Manchester) Best for: Local businesses that want web design and SEO from a genuinely local creative studio
Torx is a full service digital marketing studio in the Manchester district on Hull Street. They build custom websites and run digital marketing, including SEO, content, and social. They are truly Richmond local, and if your primary need is a new site with search built into it, that combination is their lane.
Strengths: Genuinely local Richmond studio, web design and SEO combined, personal service from a small team Considerations: Smaller shop with a wide service range, so SEO is one of several things they do. Ask to see SEO specific results, not just their web design portfolio, and confirm who handles the ongoing optimization after the site launches.
6. WebStrategies (Now Geear)#
Website: webstrategiesinc.com Based in: Midlothian, VA (Chesterfield) Best for: Financial and manufacturing companies that want a data driven, inbound heavy program
WebStrategies has been in the Richmond metro since 2004, out on Midlothian Turnpike, and they are a HubSpot Diamond Partner with a long track record in data driven digital marketing across SEO, paid search, and inbound. Recently they rebranded to Geear and narrowed their focus toward credit unions, banks, and manufacturing marketing.
Strengths: Long track record, strong HubSpot and inbound expertise, data driven reporting Considerations: The rebrand to Geear means their positioning now centers on financial and manufacturing verticals. If you are a bank, credit union, or manufacturer, that focus is a real advantage. If you are a local home services, medical, or restaurant business, you may no longer be their core focus, so ask directly whether your category still fits.
What Should You Look For in a Richmond Web Design or SEO Company?#
Forget the rankings for a minute. Whether you are hiring for SEO, a new website, or both, here is what actually matters.
Ask these questions:
- Can I talk to the person who will do the actual work, or just the person who sells it?
- Can you show me results from a Richmond area client specifically, in my kind of business?
- What will you do in month one?
- Do you require a long contract?
- For a website: who owns the site and the domain when we are done, and can I edit it myself?
- How do you report results, and how often?
Red flags to watch for:
- They guarantee first page rankings. Nobody can guarantee this.
- They will not explain in plain language what they are doing.
- Reports are stuffed with jargon you cannot follow, on purpose.
- The person who sold you is not the person doing the work.
- On a website build, they lock you into a proprietary platform you cannot leave.
Budget reality in a metro this size:
- Below $500 a month: that is not real SEO in a market as large as Richmond.
- $750 to $1,500 a month: realistic for most Richmond local businesses.
- $2,500 a month and up: appropriate for competitive categories or businesses with multiple locations.
For a website specifically, a real custom build in this market generally runs a few thousand dollars and up, not a few hundred. You can see how I price both SEO retainers and website builds on the pricing page. The right question is not "how much does it cost?" It is "how much am I losing every month by not showing up when a Richmond customer searches for what I do?"
Where Can a Small Business Actually Win in a Market the Size of Richmond?#
Richmond is a big capital metro with more than a million people across the region, and that changes the math compared to a smaller city. The broad downtown head terms sit in an established, competitive field. Chasing them first is the slow, expensive way to lose. But that is not where most of the calls come from, and it is not where a focused local business needs to win. The real openings are in three places:
- The suburbs. Short Pump, Henrico, and the West End are affluent, growing, and far less contested than downtown. When a homeowner out there searches, the local result with strong reviews gets the call. Build a genuinely useful page for each suburb worth ranking, and you are competing on ground you can actually take.
- The long tail and near me searches. There are far more "emergency water heater repair near Short Pump" searches than "Richmond plumber" searches, they are far less contested, and the person typing them is much closer to calling. That is where a small shop beats a slow agency.
- The AI answers. More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the AI overviews at the top of Google who to hire. Those surfaces are newer and less crowded, so a focused business can show up there before the bigger agencies catch on.
Any company that treats Richmond like a generic market, or tries to buy your way straight into the crowded downtown terms on day one, does not understand what they are working with. The winnable searches are more specific and closer to the sale, and they book real work.
Frequently Asked Questions#
How much does SEO cost in Richmond?
For most local businesses, plan on $750 to $1,500 a month, with competitive categories or multi location businesses running higher. The price depends on your competition, how many keywords and neighborhoods you are targeting, and whether you need content created every month. Anything under about $500 a month in a metro this size is not buying you real strategic work.
How long does SEO take to show results in Richmond?
The winnable searches, meaning the suburban and near me queries and the AI answers, can start moving in 4 to 8 weeks, especially once your Google Business Profile is finished. The broader, more contested downtown terms take longer, usually 4 to 8 months, which is exactly why a good company leads with the searches you can win sooner. Anyone promising first page results in 30 days is either lying or doing something risky.
Should I hire a local Richmond company or a national agency?
Local is better for local SEO. A company that understands the difference between Short Pump and Scott's Addition, that knows the suburbs are the winnable lane and the downtown head terms are the slog, will build a smarter strategy than a national firm applying the same template to your zip code. The catch is that "local" has to mean genuinely in the metro, not an Ashburn or out of state shop that lists Richmond as a service area.
How do I know if my current SEO company is doing a good job?
Ask them: what keywords am I ranking for now that I was not ranking for three months ago? How much organic traffic am I getting? How many leads came from organic search this month? If they cannot answer with specific numbers, that is your answer.
What is the single most valuable thing I can do for my Richmond business right now?
Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. It is free, it is the highest impact thing you can do today, and most Richmond businesses have theirs half finished.
